Common scam signs in Cambodia
Banks, ministries and police in Cambodia warn about these tricks again and again.
Asks for an OTP or PIN, even when it claims to be your bank.
Asks for a fee, tax or deposit before you get a loan, job or prize.
Threatens to freeze or close your account unless you click a link now.
Claims to be a relative with a new number who needs money.
Offers high-paid typing or call-centre work in Poipet, Sihanoukville or Bavet.
Asks you to pay a power bill or government fee through an agent or a personal account.
Questions people ask
How can I tell if a KHQR code is real or edited?
Send a photo of the QR to CheckSen. It shows the real recipient name, account, bank and amount, and checks the code's check digits. Before paying, always check the recipient's name in your own bank app.
Do banks ever ask for my OTP code by phone or Telegram?
No. Real banks and companies never ask for your OTP code, PIN or password. Anyone who asks for them is most likely a scammer.
Is CheckSen free? Do I need to install an app?
It's free and there's nothing to install. Open @CheckSen_bot in Telegram and send it a message, link or photo.
I already paid a scammer. What should I do?
Call your bank right away on the number on your card or in its app, and ask them to stop the transfer. Keep screenshots of the messages and the payment receipt, and report it to the police. Don't pay anyone who promises to get your money back for a fee.
Can CheckSen tell me a message is safe?
No. It can only say whether it found known scam signs. A new trick may not be caught yet, so when in doubt, check through your bank's official number or app.
Privacy
Your messages are not kept.
CheckSen checks messages and images in memory and doesn't save them. Its code is open, so anyone can check this on GitHub.
- Messages and images
- Not saved. The reply is kept in memory for an hour, keyed only by a hash of the content.
- AI checks
- Text and screenshots are sent to Google Gemini's free tier. Google may use them to improve its products and people may review them.Hide account numbers and personal details before you send.
- Reports
- If you tap ❌ on a KHQR check, a report is stored against that account, linked only to a keyed hash of your Telegram ID. An account shows as reported only after 3 different people report it.
